I encourage conversations that help me adjust examples and teaching approach to meet each student's needs.  I believe students retain knowledge and problem-solving skills when they have an understanding of underlying concepts.  When beginning a topic with a student, I use questioning techniques to gain insight into where the breakdown in understanding is occurring. After addressing any weaknesses in foundation principles, I complete relevant examples with the student, explaining each step as I proceed and pausing often to check for understanding.  With each subsequent example, I encourage the student to become more independent, eventually guiding me through problems or more complex conceptual questions.
